LCS Superintendent Search
Lynchburg City Schools is currently looking for a new Superintendent. The school board is utilizing an ad hoc committee to guide the process of searching for candidates to fill the position. Find more information on the committee below or visit the LCS website here.

- Closing date for applications: Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025 (11:30 p.m. central time)
- School Board selects finalists to interview: March 2025
- Finalists Interviews with the School Board: March 2025
- Selection of new Superintendent: Early April 2025
- Start date: on or before Tuesday, July 1, 2025

We have a new Superintendent at LCS! Well her official start date is July 1, 2025 but it has been announced. We welcome Dr. Kristy Sommerville-Midgette to the LCS family.
Dr. Somerville-Midgette expressed her gratitude and commitment, stating, "This city, this school division—it shaped me as a teacher, as a leader, and as a person. I truly return to you with gratitude, a sense of purpose, and excitement, and I’m committed to serving the students and the community that helped me build the foundation of my career."
Quick Facts:
- Currently Division Superintendent for Brunswick County Public Schools
- Earned her Bachelor's and Master's in Special Education from the University of Lynchburg (formerly Lynchburg College)
- Earned her PhD in Educational Leadership and Administration from Liberty University
- She completed her student teaching within LCS (Perrymont Elementary & EC Glass High School) & was a Special Education teacher in LCS from 2003-2006
- She has help various other positions throughout education including Assistant Principal, Principal, Director of Secondary Instruction and CTE, and Assistant Superintendent.

- Evelyn P. Bickman Outstanding Undergraduate Alumni Award.

- Brunswick NAACP Educator of the Year Award.
- 2022 Region VIII Superintendent of the Year.
- President of VASS
- Vice President of WELV.
- Virginia Governing Board Representative for the American Association of School Superintendents.
- Former Clarksville Town Council Member.
Update as of 03/14/2025
The applications are in and have been distributed to all school board and ad hoc members for review and ranking. There will be a joint closed session on 03/18 for them to review any feedback, review applicants, and make a plan for who they are going to move forward to the interview process with. The School Board is typically responsible for any costs of travel, lodging, etc for an applicant to interview for the position. This will be taken into account when deciding how many applicants they want to move to the next phase.
Community Feedback
As it looks to best meet the needs of students, families, staff members, and community members in the years ahead, the School Board seeks feedback that will help inform the search process for the superintendent. Community members are invited to attend a series of feedback sessions, during which they can share their thoughts on the experiences, attributes, and characteristics they think the next superintendent should have.

Ad Hoc Superintendent Search Committee
The committee will play a pivotal role in selecting candidates for consideration by the School Board. The committee will oversee the process of selecting the consulting search firm, identifying qualified candidates, conducting interviews, and making recommendations to the School Board. The members of the Ad Hoc Superintendent Search Committee include:
- Dr. Mark Tinsley - Co-Chair of the committee and current School Board member
- Dr. Mike Nilles - Co-Chair of the committee and former School Board chairman who helped hire Dr. Edwards in 2018
- Letitia Lowery - Current School Board member
- Timothy Beatty - Principal, Heritage High School
- Danny McCain - Lynchburg community member
- Colleen Larkins - LCS Parent (and SOS Volunteer)
